This printer makes exceptional prints on a wide variety of paper and is built like a tank. However, it’s definitely not for point and shoot hobbyists, or even impatient amateurs.
Ink usage seems far less than my comparable epsons, and this printer is never clogged, meaning no wasted paper. However, it takes a while to figure out, and it takes a bit of work. For instance, the media type must be chosen in the driver software as well as on the printer hardware itself to ensure that the right ink, vaccuum settings, etc. are in place.
Moreover, using this means you need a good working knowledge of color profiling, and you should probably add a ColorMunki Photo to your cart, because you’ll want that to make sure your monitor is calibrated, and to produce custom print profiles for the iPF if you don’t use the factory paper and canned profiles (or even if you do).
This thing comes in a box big enough to ship Vlad, his dirt, and a few of his minions, so make sure you have a 6 pack on hand to lure in the local knuckle draggers to help you get it up the stairs. And get a sturdy table to put this 100 pounder on. I used an office task table — but with a file cabinet underneath to keep it standing strong.

Print Head (firmware) Problems with IPF5100 – Doug – Florida USAThis is a fantastic printer. We have used 2 of them for over 2 years. Until firmware ver 1.38 came out. Now it will not allow printing to continue if the head has the slightest clog. It will not even print out the sheet showing if the head is clogged. It just stops and says print head must be replaced (0 to 0 ea) Tech support just says that the print heads are expendable.
Don’t Buy!!! – M. Czerniuk – Evanston, IL United StatesI’ve had the IPF 5000 for about 2 years and never been happy with it. First, if you own a mac, it’s a real coin toss as to weather the drivers are going to work. When a new Mac OS comes out, it’s unbelievable how long Canon takes to update the driver. You almost have to keep a dedicated system/computer that you don’t upgrade hooked up to the printer for it to work. When I was finally able to get prints out, the are beautiful. Yesterday (Sept 1st, 2009) I had a technician out because I was getting a “carriage motion error.” Turns out the replacement parts would be over 0. It’s a 00 machine. For 00 I would expect more than 2 years of limited output. For a “pro-level” printer, I would look elsewhere. Canon doesn’t give enough support to warrant the price.
Excellent Value And Quality – D. E. Rees – The Slopes of UtahThe iPF5100 is a large, high quality printer, capable of output as good as or better than the competition and of more expensive printers. The ink usage is tolerable, and the paper handling is superb. Black and white images on art paper are IMHO best of class.
Setup is quite easy. The roll paper unit works very well. Bronzing is no worse, but probably no better than the competition.
There are many who will argue about definition in the complex design of the droplets deposited onto the page, just photographers would over argue over the characteristic grain of various print papers, yet few will be using a magnifying loop to enjoy the artistic quality of a 16×20 print. The point being, the dot pattern looks different than the competition, not worse or better, just different. At any normal viewing distance this is not of question.
Speed is good enough I have not timed output.
There are some quirks with print driver, not difficult, just a little different way of modeling the tasks than others have used.
I have called Canon on occasion with questions and found their support and attitude of help to be top notch. *** Product Information and Prices Stored: Sep 09, 2010 11:00:06
Cheap Stairway Bunk Beds Dominoes Sets
I bought this printer to replace an almost new Epson Workforce 500 (a combination printer which was my very expensive mistake). This printer is “likety-split” fast, especially after dealing with inkjet printers. The copy quality is excellent. Cost per copy is less than half of many inkjet printers. The cartridges can be had for a song–half or less of an inkjet, and you get 1,000-2,000 copies per cartridge. Unlike inkjet printers, where ink quality makes a big difference, laserjets do wonderfully with reloaded cartridges. Loading the cartridge is the easiest of any laser printer I’ve ever worked with–get the cartridge in the approximate location and it loads itself! Now, it doesn’t print color, but I’ve so rarely needed color that it matters not at all. The footprint of this little workhorse is small, and it is so quiet! This is a thousand times better than my Epson paperweight!

Love the HP P1505N Laserjet Printer – Julie Kaufman – GENESEO, IL, USI love this printer. I have bought several and will be disappointed when I can’t purchase them anymore.
Too many problems–jobs get stuck in queue – Brian Kelly – Glendale, CA USAThe company I work at bought several of these, and we’ve had far more than the usual number of problems. The most frequent problem is that print jobs get stuck in the print queue and cannot be deleted from the queue. You have to stop the spooler, use Windows Explorer to delete the file under Windows\System32\Spool\Printers, and then restart the spooler. Other printers rarely do this. Also, the cartridges are small so you have a relatively high cost per page. Finally, the paper guides don’t do the greatest job of keeping the paper straight — sometimes you get printouts that are slightly crooked. In my opinion, between this printer and the trouble-prone P3005, HP’s LaserJets have gone way downhill. They use to be rock solid reliable but that’s a thing of the past.
We’re replacing all of the P1505s.
A good little printer for low volume Windows printing. – THATCH – OHIOThis is a nice, fairly small desktop printer that is black/white only. It works well with windows and is pretty easy to set up.
The print quality is good, the speed to first print is very good, but with the tiny toner cartridge I would only recommend this for someone who prints 20 or fewer sheets per day.
